Report on the Japan Education Fair in India!

As though reflecting the social situation, which is filled with feverish energy, the Japan Education Fair in New Delhi and Bengaluru, India, ended on a high note. About 100 people came to Tohoku University’s booth in each city, asking questions about courses, application procedures, and student life in Sendai.

The participants’ interests can be categorized roughly in three groups—management, computer science and engineering. Since the FGL program’s undergraduate courses are science oriented, the majority of those who came to us were interested in engineering. We got the impression that their methods for choosing courses were very cool and pragmatic. Rather than studying for pleasure, it was obvious that they wanted to make use of knowledge acquired through course work to survive in the coming globalized future.

When they had some free time, the staff from Tohoku University took walks and intermingled with the habitants on the streets. The Muslim palaces in Delhi were astounding, and the temples told us that Indian culture regards cattle as sacred. While roads were filled with cars and huge busses, the commercial markets gave off a good smell because of spices and flowers such as chrysanthemums.

Currently, there is one student from India in our program so far. We really hope that at least some of the fair participants will apply and eventually enter our program next year.
