School visit in Malaysia 2013

A presentation on Tohoku University’s FGL program was given in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in March. This was our first visit and it was one of the most fruitful, with many discoveries.

Sekolah Menengah Sains Alam Shah

The first school we visited was a boys’ boarding school called Sekolah Menengah Sains Alam Shah. Wearing uniforms like policemen, security guards and so on, students warmly welcomed us and curiously listened to our explanation. Some students asked us questions about student life and differences of culture between the two countries, such as food.

University of Malaya Centre for Foundation Studies in Science

In Malaysia, students complete their education in 11 years. Since a twelve-year education is mandatory for FGL applicants to be eligible, Tohoku University can only accept applicants in Malaysia who are in a university preparatory course. Therefore, we were happy to have a chance to meet students at the University of Malaya Centre for Foundation Studies in Science. They looked very surprised when photos of surfing and skiing, both taken in Sendai, were projected on the white screen.

Sekolah Aminuddin Baki
The last school we visited was Sekolah Aminuddin Baki. The school is situated in the center of Kuala Lumpur, and has both male and female students. After the presentation, Dr. Chen of Tohoku University asked the students which course sounded the most attractive. The AMB course was their answer.

We were also able to meet teachers and the directors of Chong Hwa Independent High School and Institut Bahasa Teikyo. All these visits were made possible thanks to one of our alumni, Ahmad Syahril.

The deadline of the second recruitment period is approaching (May 31). You are very much welcome to inquire about our program and anything related to it and Sendai. Good luck!
